 Post subject: EGR Valve?

My 97 LGT seems to be throwing an EGR code. I was told that if i check the slide action(move it in and out) and it is easy moving, that it should be fine. Anyone else have any ideas on why it would be throwing a code? And it seems my MPG is horrible now also... getting approx 100-130 on half tank of premium. :?
